Our Thoughts On Impaired Driving

The Randolph Police Department is committed to promoting traffic safety,

by reducing incidents of impaired driving.  We firmly believe this goal can

be met through a combination of education and  proactive enforcement.

Impaired driving, also known as OUI, or operating under the influence

is a very real danger on our roadways.  National studies have repeatedly

shown that between 10 and 14% of drivers on the road between 9:00 p.m.

and 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday are driving under the influence.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the

average alcohol-impaired operator commits the violation 80 times a year.

Every half hour someone in America dies in an alcohol-related crash, and

approximately 2 out of 5 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related

crash at some time in their lives.

Many of our officers are trained in using roadside sobriety tests

to detect impairment in drivers.  Driving is a complex task made up of many

simpler tasks, such as accelerating, steering, and signaling, and requires

the ability to do several things at once.  Alcohol inhibits the ability to divide

attention, and roadside tests are used to assess divided attention.

The Randolph Police Department is involved with the Drug Evaluation

and Classification Program. Through this program highly trained officers known

as Drug Recognition Experts are able to detect impairment in drivers from

drugs or alcohol.  The Randolph Police Department is also involved with the

“You Drink & Drive, You Lose!” program.  Through this, supplemental

traffic enforcement patrols are added which focus on OUI and other

violations.

The Police department sincerely believes that we can make our

streets safer through the detection and apprehension of impaired drivers.
