Detective Bureau
The primary
function of the detective bureau is to do the follow up investigations,
started by the
patrol division. After the initial investigation by the uniformed patrol
officer, a
report is generated and information is passed to the duty detectives..
The detectives
work closely with other agencies to coordinate the investigation.
These agencies
include all Federal, State, and Local law enforcement.
Detectives take
control of cases such as homicide, rape, narcotics violations,
fraud,
intellectual properties theft (to include computer crimes), arson, etc.
A normal
function of a duty detective would include processing photographs
and
fingerprints. Once prints are secure, , they can be matched with those
already on file
with various agencies throughout the country.
On a majority
of the cases the detectives will gather evidence,
take statements
and pursue the case using whatever resources are available to them.
One of the main
responsibilities of the detective is to gather and maintain all
evidence in a
case; all evidence gathered must be tagged and secured until
the case is
complete. A chain of custody record is maintained as well.
